Summary
This document outlines four "purposes" for the code of ethical standards, including to "uphold the honour and dignity," identify ethical responsibilities, guide ethical decisions, and promote public trust in teachers. (OCT, 2020) There is in addition a code of standards of practice for teachers, the purpose of which is to establish a shared vision of teaching and to "to identify the values, knowledge and skills that are distinctive to the teaching profession." These in turn are supported by the Ontario College of Teachers Professional Learning Framework (OCT, 2016) that "describes some opportunities and processes that support ongoing professional learning for educators."The ethical standards themselves are divided into four major areas: care, which includes "compassion, acceptance, interest and insight for developing students' potential"; respect, which includes trust, fairness, social justice, freedom, and democracy; trust, which includes "fairness, openness and honesty"; and integrity, which includes honesty and reliability.
