Summary

Fjeld, et.al. (2020:44), comment, "It is notable that the Access Now report is one of the few documents in our dataset that specifically adopts a human rights framework." The Access Now authors explain, "The use of international human rights law and its well-developed standards and institutions to examine artificial intelligence systems can contribute to the conversations already happening, and provide a universal vocabulary and forums established to address power differentials" (Access Now, 2018:6).
The Access Now report takes the time to define analytics and artificial intelligence and to identify a number of ways AI is "helpful" before identifying a number of "harmful" applications such as perpetuating bias, facilitating mass surveillance, and driving discrimination against the marginalized. But the main focus is the description of the potential impact on AI on specific human rights issues ranging from equality before the law to privacy and data protection, self-determination, right to work and to an education.
