Summary
This document, dating from 1992, sets out the scope of academic ethics before the impact of analytics and AI became known. addresses faculty members first as teachers, and then as scholars. "The first responsibility of university teachers is the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge and understanding through teaching and research. They must devote their energies conscientiously to develop their scholarly competence and effectiveness as teachers" (SFU, 1992)The statement describes the defense of academic freedom as an "obligation" on faculty members, returning to this theme several times. For example, "It is unethical for faculty members to enter into any agreement that infringes their freedom to publish the results of research conducted within the University precincts or under University auspices." And in another place, "They have the obligation to defend the right of their colleagues to academic freedom. It is unethical to act so as deliberately to infringe that freedom" (Ibid).
Other themes include fairness to students, including especially refraining from exploiting free academic labour, and ensuring credit is given for any academic work they may have depended on. Faculty must also keep privileged information confidential, maintain collegial behaviour ("they should refrain from denigration of the character and competence of their colleagues" (Ibid)), and avoid conflict of interest.
